Ever wonder why wood turns gray? How about whether or not wood is worth saving? Upcycling old wood products like fencing and flooring is not just fun, it keeps useful things from ending up in the landfill.
Class will begin with a discussion the aging process of hardwood. Discussion will include what causes wood to gray, as well as techniques that can be used to speed up the aging process. This is helpful if you have to cut ends of your old wood. Some of these processes will be demonstrated before moving on to the class project: upcycling aged oak flooring into a decorative holiday tree that can either stand or hang on a wall.
Students will learn and apply basic gluing techniques, practice drill skills as they apply to hardwood, and finally, decorate their tree for the holidays with ribbons and bulbs. Students should expect to leave with a finished product and a new appreciated for old wood.
